Meaford Updates Water and Wastewater Billing for 2026

The Municipality of Meaford has announced changes to how water and wastewater bills are calculated, effective February 1, 2026. The updates move the community toward a consumption-based system where billing is more closely connected to actual household water usage.

What is Changing

The current billing system relies heavily on flat monthly charges, meaning low-use households pay similar amounts to higher-use households. A new tiered consumption model is now being introduced.

Under this approach:

  • Consumers who use less water will benefit from lower per-unit costs
  • Higher consumption levels will fall into higher rate tiers
  • Service charges remain part of each bill to fund essential infrastructure but will make up a smaller share of the total

What This Means for Residents

The shift to tiered rates gives residents more control over their water bills. Low and moderate water users may see smaller increases, while higher water users will see costs rise in line with consumption.

This model encourages water conservation and aligns billing with actual system use. Water and wastewater services are fully funded by users rather than property taxes, and these updates help ensure long-term sustainability, regulatory compliance, and continued investment in safe, reliable drinking water.
